Nutrition
Nutritional Perks (Yes, Really!)
Chili cheese dogs may seem indulgent, but they offer surprising nutritional benefits when enjoyed in moderation. The chili often delivers a protein boost from ground meat and a dose of fiber if you include beans. The cheese, while rich, provides calcium and essential vitamins like B12. Hot dogs can be a good source of protein, but choose high-quality, nitrate-free options for a healthier and more nutritious choice.
Balance it with a whole-grain bun and fresh toppings like onions, tomatoes, or avocado, and you’ve got a slightly more nutrient-packed treat.
Storing Leftover Chili Cheese Dogs
Made too many chili cheese dogs? No worries—they’re easy to store and reheat. For the best results, separate the components before storing them. Keep the buns, hot dogs, and chili in individual airtight containers. You can be refrigerate the Chili for up to three days or frozen for up to three months. Reheat it on the stove or microwave, stirring occasionally, until it’s piping hot.
For the hot dogs, store them in the fridge for up to three days. When reheating, toss them on a grill pan or a skillet to bring back some of that charred goodness. Store buns in a sealed bag at room temperature, or freeze them if you want to keep them longer.
Food Safety Tips to Keep in Mind
Food safety is key to keeping everyone happy and healthy when handling chili cheese dogs. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- Cook hot dogs thoroughly: Heat them to an internal temperature of 165°F to kill any potential bacteria.
- Store chili promptly: Don’t leave chili sitting out for more than two hours. If the weather is hot (above 90°F), this window shrinks to just one hour.
- Reheat leftovers properly: Make sure to reheat any leftover chili or hot dogs to at least 165°F before serving.
- Handle buns with care: Store buns in their original packaging or a sealed container to keep them fresh and free from contamination.
Chili cheese dogs are more than just a meal; they are a vibe. Perfect for sharing with friends and family, they bring a sense of joy and nostalgia to the table. Whether you’re grilling them up at a summer barbecue or making them on a cozy night in, these messy, delicious creations are sure to hit the spot.
