Guavas have various minerals and nutrients

Guava is a tropical fruit produced by the guava tree. Large quantities of the guava fruit are produced in the Philippines and other countries such as Brazil, Colombia, Venezuela, and Mexico. The fruit is commonly eaten fresh or made into beverages, jams, and other foods. The fruit, leaves, and juice are also used as medicine.

How to Eat It: Down the entire fruit, from the rind to the seeds. It’s all edible—and nutritious. The rind alone has more vitamin C than you’d find in the flesh of an orange.

Why it’s Healthy: Guava has a higher concentration of lycopene—an antioxidant that fights prostate cancer—than any other plant food, including tomatoes and watermelon. In addition, 1 cup of the stuff provides 688 milligrams (mg) of potassium, which is 63 percent more than you’ll find in a medium banana. And guava may be the ultimate high-fiber food: There’s almost 9 grams (g) of fiber in every cup.

The health benefits of guava can only be enjoyed by those who eat the fruit wholly. Examples of illnesses that can be cured by guavas include scurvy, high blood pressure, dysentery, constipation and diarrhea. Even common cold and coughs can be cured by this super-fruit. Guavas may be seasonal, but there seems to be an all-year-round supply. This can be attributed to the fact that different seasons are experienced at different times in Africa and Asia, which are the two main sources of guavas.

The amount and concentration of nutrients contained in the guava fruit is the main reason why fitness enthusiasts and nutritionist refer to it as the super-fruit. Guavas have high concentrations of minerals, vitamins, proteins and roughage. When these fruits are grown, no chemical pesticide or fertilizer is used, so they are considered organic. Nutritionists from all over the world recommend this fruit.

Here are the Health Benefits of Guava:

1. Lowers cancer risk

Guava contains the highest vitamin C content among produce at four times more than oranges. Vitamin C is known as one of the potent antioxidants which help protects cells from free radical damage. High levels of oxidants in the body can damage cell membranes and may contribute to the development of heart disease and cancer.

2. Lowers risk of diabetes

Looking for other sources of fiber? Grab a delicious guava. It is rich in fiber, one of the most talked about nutrients today as it has found to be beneficial in a wide range of disease prevention including diabetes by slowing down the absorption of sugar in the body and thus very beneficial for diabetic individuals. A high fiber diet has also been linked to a lowered risk of developing type-2 diabetes.

3. Promotes good eyesight

Guavas are very good sources of vitamin A, the nutrient best known for preserving and improving eyesight.

4. Helps promote fertility

Munching on guava also supplies a good amount of folate in the body. The mineral folate is known for its fertility-promoting properties.

5. Helps regulate blood pressure levels

High blood pressure can be treated by regular consumption of this super-fruit. Moreover, guavas are known to increase the fluidity of blood. This can help to prevent thickening of blood from occurring. The unique properties of guavas can also help to lower blood sugar content. This will help to bring down blood pressure to healthy levels. One cup of guava is packed with almost the same potassium as bananas.

6. Promotes healthy thyroid gland

No, guavas don’t contain iodine; they are good sources of copper, a trace mineral which plays a role in thyroid metabolism especially in hormone production and absorption.

7. Helps the body make use of key nutrients

One of the key functions of manganese in the body is being an enzyme activator including the enzymes responsible for the utilization of some key nutrients such as biotin, thiamine and ascorbic acid. Guavas are good sources of manganese.

8. Helps to bring about weight loss

Guavas are packed with roughage, fibers and many essential nutrients. They can help to bring about weight loss by reducing hunger pangs and making a person feel full at all times. This works to reduce food intake so as to bring about weight loss. Since guavas do not contain cholesterol or indigestible carbohydrates, they are the ideal weight loss remedy.

9. Keeps brain healthy

The B group of vitamins play a vital role in brain function. Guavas are rich in vitamin B3 and B6. Vitamin B3, also known as niacin stimulates brain function and promotes blood flow, and vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, is an important nutrient for brain and nerve function.

10. Helps maintain healthy skin

Regular guava consumption can also do the skin good through its vitamin E content. Vitamin E helps maintain healthy skin through its antioxidant properties.

I have never tried guava before but will see if I can find it in the stores I go to. If it has more lycopene, potassium and high fiber than the fruits and veggies I consume than I want it. You have given so much info on the benefits of this fruit that I did not know. Thanks.

I never knew that every part of the guava could be eaten, nor that it was so high in lycopene. It is also rich in B vitamins which promote brain health.
